Super! Super! They all shouted as a sea of blue shrouded the Victor Chin Kit Park in Point Fortin as hometown hero Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons received the keys to his brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer GLX.With yesterday being declared "Super Friday" by Point Fortin mayor Clyde Paul, the prize-giving ceremony of the TUCO/Vibe CT 105.1 FM Road March Competition 2013, resembled a coronation with fans hailing Lyons as the "King of Soca."
Standing next his fully loaded 1.6 litre car, presented to him by Diamond Motors' general manager Rishi Basdeo, Lyons showered praise on the crowd, who he said had supported him for decades."Thank you to the people of Point Fortin, thank God, friends and family. I just prayed and prayed and now everything is as it is," he said.Lyons told reporters this year's experience meant that he would return in 2014 to the defend his Soca Monarch and Road March titles.
And as the 25th Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations climaxes today at 4 am, Lyons would be in his J'Ouvert band, Water and Powder, named after a phrase from his title-winning song, Fantastic Friday. In 1980, Point Fortin became a borough, the same year Lyons won his first Road March title with his hit Soca Baptist.
As he delved into a performance of Fantastic Friday, even Paul and Tuco president Lutalo "Brother Resistance" Masimba were bouncing to the catchy tune. Paul explained that this year's borough celebrations were dubbed "the resurgence" because of Lyons' incredible comeback.Guardian Media Ltd's promotions manager Stefan Williams said it was extremely poignant that Lyons re-imaged himself the same year the group chose to re-image the concept of radio in T&T and the Caribbean.
