Devant: There’s no cabal in UNC
Food Production Minister Devant Maharaj has expressed support for Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, while saying that former national security minister Jack Warner is within his right to mobilise support for his candidacy as the Chaguanas West representative. In an interview at yesterday’s stakeholders consultation for farmers at the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation, Macoya, Maharaj said: “I share the PM’s view that every member of the party can be a candidate if they so desire.”
He said Warner remained a member of the UNC and he was entitled to file nomination papers and to be subjected to the party’s screening committee. He said Warner “is within his right” to “mobilise support to that end. “There is nothing wrong with what he is doing.”
Maharaj also responded to claims of a cabal in the party, saying: “I have kept hearing about this cabal. I am in the UNC, I move around with the party and attend meetings. I am not aware of a cabal. At one point in time I was accused of being part of the cabal but all of us share a relationship with the PM. “We are involved in a political struggle, not since we came into government but from long before,” he said.
Citing Local Government and Works Minister Surujrattan Rambachan as an example, Maharaj said Rambachan went as far back as the days of the Organisation for National Reconstruction, which later became the National Alliance for Reconstruction. He also said that Warner too had been a politician for some time, along with Persad-Bissessar.
“Each one on our team shares some kind of relationship with each other as well as the PM.” He said there was no evidence of a cabal and each member shared his or her views from time-to-time, solicited or unsolicited.
