Labour Minister Errol McLeod has rejected calls for him to abandon the People's Partnership Government and return to the trade union movement.Speaking at the UNC's Monday Night Forum, McLeod made it clear that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is his leader and he remained loyal to her.
It was on May Day last week that Ancel Roget, president general of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union–formerly led by McLeod–pleaded with him to "come home before it is too late," warning that history would be unforgiving to those who turned their backs on the trade unions.
But addressing the forum McLeod said: "Last Tuesday a runt of a little despicable miscreant was on his radio frequency condemning Errol McLeod. Mine is a history that nobody will erase in T&T and that is in the minds of workers some of whom are being misled today...
"When I went to Fyzabad on April 21, 2010 I said to the world that in this organisation, this partnership, Kamla Persad-Bissessar is my leader. I did not come out of retirement to join this to be used and abused and I am not going to be controlled by anybody outside of the Government."He said he was making a commitment to improve the lot of workers."And I will remain in the PP Government so long as Kamla Persad-Bissessar will have me there," he added.
