The attorney representing the man charged with possession of explosives and detonators yesterday appealed to the magistrate to make an order compelling police officers to produce the suspect in court today. The appeal was made by attorney Balram Singh, on behalf of the 31-year-old suspect from Pinto Road, Arima, when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan in the Arima court.
Singh, who spent the day waiting on his client to be brought to the court, said the man was arrested on Friday and charged on Saturday. However, after officers failed to bring the suspect to court yesterday, Singh said his client's rights were infringed, and he sought the court's assistance to order the suspect be produced today.Singh said he had spoken with officers at the Arima Police Station yesterday, and had met with the suspect during the lunch break.
Refusing to divulge what offence the suspect had been charged with, Singh said despite this, his client was "entitled to the protection of the law."Unable to assist Singh, Cardenas-Ragoonanan explained that the court had no jurisdictional powers to compel officers to bring the suspect to court today, as no information had been laid before the court. The man was arrested on Friday afternoon during a raid at his home. Police said they found a quantity of bomb-making instruments.
