A second autopsy was done yesterday on the body of prisoner Placid Aimard Lima, who was beaten to death while at Golden Grove Remand Yard on Sunday. The findings of the autopsy, done by pathologist Prof Hubert Daisley at a funeral home in Penal, will be released later today by lawyers representing Lima's family. But yesterday Lima's brother, Brian, in a telephone interview, said Daisley told relatives that the 47-year-old father of two died from blunt-force trauma.
This appeared to be consistent with the findings of the first autopsy, done on Monday by pathologist Dr Hughvon des Vignes, which concluded that Lima died from multiple blunt-force injuries.
Brian said from the injuries on his brother's body, it seemed a weapon such as a staff or a baton was used to beat him.A source said Daisley's report noted that Lima suffered a painful death as all his ribs on the left side were broken.
Daisley also concluded that Lima's left lung collapsed and he was assaulted with a long, blunt object which was inserted into his rectum. This caused massive internal injuries. Lima was also stabbed."He died from licks, blows to his body with a blunt object. From what he (Daisley) said, I suspect is a baton that they used. I saw his body. I know a prisoner would not have an object to cause that damage."It is not a fist that could have caused that damage," Brian insisted yesterday.
His sister Gloria, who was also at the funeral home, said she was in the process of getting a legal aid attorney for her brother on Monday when she received the news that he had died in prison.Lima appeared in the Siparia Magistrates Court last week Friday on a bench warrant which was issued for him for a 25-year-old rape case involving a 17-year-old girl.He was sent to the Remand Yard of the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca and was expected to return to court today.
A report said around 11.45 pm on Sunday, he got into an altercation with ten other inmates and was reportedly beaten for several minutes before prison guards heard the commotion and intervened. He collapsed and was taken to the prison infirmary and was later transferred to hospital, where he died.Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.
