PM: Govt will do all to help flood victims
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said yesterday the Government will do all it can to relieve flood victims in Diego Martin, St Joseph and other districts of their discomfort. Residents of Diego Martin were severely affected by flooding yesterday morning, while those in St Joseph and nearby areas were affected on Wednesday.
Dealing with yesterday’s flooding, Persad-Bissessar said she was the one who asked for the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) to be mobilised to assist victims yesterday morning. She said she was told of the situation by text message at 2 am and contacted National Security Minister Gary Griffith, the ODPM and others to help. “There was instant response from us as early as 3 o’clock this morning,” she added.
Persad-Bissessar said the Government was “on top of the situation.” She said she also told Environment and Water Resources Minister Ganga Singh and Minister of the People and Social Development Glenn Ramadharsingh to return to St Joseph yesterday to monitor the situation and help in any way possible. She commended the ODPM and other agencies for their quick response to the calls and said the extent of damage was being assessed and further assistance would be given to those affected.
