Cop faces charge of tipping off suspect
A Chaguanas-based Task Force police officer is expected to appear before Port-of-Spain magistrate today for allegedly tipping off a suspected car thief that police were on their way to arrest him. The 32-year-old is accused of broadcasting still photos, via BlackBerry Messenger, of a CCTV video of the suspected car thief stealing the car. Yesterday the police constable was detained by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard gave instructions to investigator Sgt Bryon Daniel to charge the officer under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The officer was charged with corruptly leaking official information under Section 5 (1) (b) of the act. According to police reports the officer was a member of the Task Force team searching for the stolen vehicle when he recognised the suspected car thief and tipped him off about the investigation.
