Pres on Kenya terrorist attack: It’s a message for T&T Defence Force
The recent attack by gunmen inside an upscale Nairobi shopping mall in Kenya that claimed the lives of 68 people should send a message to T&T that our national defence force must always be in a state of readiness for any eventuality. This was the message President Anthony Carmona delivered at the T&T Defence Force’s 51st anniversary of the commander-in-chief parade in Chaguaramas yesterday.
Addressing members of the defence force and guests, which included National Security Minister Gary Griffith, Carmona said that the stark reality in this 21st century was terrorism. “It takes no prisoner. The forces of terrorism are formidable.” Carmona said that no one was safe and too often, “we engage in a false sense of security.” He said what unfolded in Kenya remind us how “ruthless, callous and cowardly terrorism can be.”
Carmona said many innocent lives were taken in the attack, including our very own Ravindra Ramrattan, who he described as a brilliant young son of the soil. The Kenya military, just like the T&T Defence Force, Carmona said, was not fighting a war, but they had to be called in to effectively arrest the grim situation. Carmona pleaded with the defence force to provide inspired leadership to the nation. “This inspired leadership is born not only out of dedicated service but also out of impeccable integrity.”
