Independent Liberal Party (ILP) candidate Kerwin Bucchan yesterday was granted $250,000 bail on five gun-related charges. Bucchan, 38, who owns a fabricating company, had spent the last seven days in jail after he was refused bail during his first court appearance so the police could find out if he had convictions in the United States. Yesterday court prosecutor Sgt Shiva Boodoo told Senior Magistrate Gillian David-Scotland the police did not have sufficient time to get any official documents from Interpol. He said the police only received information via the telephone.
Bucchan had a new attorney who made another application for bail.Attorney Annmarie Phillip said Bucchan was entitled to bail even if it was substantial and came with conditions.Bucchan, who was nominated to contest the Morvant seat in the October 21 local government elections, is charged with three counts of shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The other two charges alleged that at Lady Young Road, Morvant, he had a Taurus 45 pistol and 12 rounds of .45 ammunition in his possession with intent to endanger life. The charges were read to him when he first appeared before Third Court Magistrate Bramanand Dubey on October 3.He will next appear in court on November 7.
