The People's National Movement (PNM), which gained the largest number of corporations in the October 21 local government elections, yesterday released the names of its 37 aldermen in 12 corporations.The front-runners for the position of mayors of Port-of-Spain, Arima, San Fernando and Point Fortin respectively are Raymond Tim Kee, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation; businessman George Hadeed, businessman Kazim Hosein and Clyde Paul, who previously held the post.
The party has also nominated Daryl Smith, Ramdai Amarsingh Rampersad and Onika Myers-Haynes to head the Diego Martin, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporations respectively.At the close of the polls, the party won eight of the 14 municipalities, with the People's Partnership (PP) gaining five and a split occurring in the borough of Chaguanas, with the PNM and People's Partnership acquiring three districts each and the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) two.This was the first time that aldermen were allocated using the system of proportional representation.Under the PR system, the Elections and Boundaries Commission announced on Friday the PNM would have 36 aldermen in 12 corporations.
