EBC has not given me official results—Warner
Interim political leader of the Independent Liberal Party Jack Warner said yesterday he had not received an official copy of the results of local government elections from the Elections and Boundaries Commission. He described the situation as “strange” and unprecedented since his party could not submit a list of aldermen without the results. Warner said he also wanted to challenge a matter in the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation but could not without the results.
He said he wrote to the EBC yesterday asking for it. “One day I have ten aldermen, one day I have five and one day I have four,” Warner said, during a walkabout with his party candidate for the St Joseph by-election yesterday. “This one, for me, was most unusual, most extraordinary,” Warner said.
Warner blamed the situation on the rushed introduction of the system of proportional representation to select aldermen. Legislation to implement the system was approved in Parliament weeks before the October 21 poll. He said the PR system was not properly studied by the Government and citizens did not have an opportunity to digest or discuss it. “It was obscene in Parliament, the way it was presented,” Warner added. “What we are experiencing today was created by the Government.”
Warner said it was not only Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar who had lawyers. He said the ILP also had lawyers in Trinidad and abroad and if “at the appropriate time, if I don’t get the answers, I know what I have to do.” He said he was confident the matter of the appointment of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation will be resolved shorty.
In that corporation there was a deadlock, with the PNM and UNC winning three electoral districts and the ILP two. This has created a problem with the appointment of aldermen. The matter could be resolved in the court.
