Beetham man killed by police
A 17-year-old was shot dead in an alleged shoot-out with police in Beetham Gardens early yesterday. Police said around 12.30 pm yesterday, police from the Port-of-Spain Division Task Force were on patrol on Sixth Street when they saw two armed men walking at the side of the road.
They told the men to put their weapons on the ground and surrender. However, they claimed the men ignored their requests, pointed the guns at them and began shooting. The police returned fire, hitting one of the men several times. The other man ran away, leaving his wounded accomplice behind. The injured suspect was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he died while being treated. Police found a loaded 9 mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition near the scene of the shooting.
The dead man was identified as Kadeem Williams, of Seventh Street, Beetham Gardens. The incident occurred almost two months after residents of that community staged several days of fiery protests after police killed another resident. In that incident, on September 1, the 23-year-old victim, Christopher Greaves, was shot dead near his Third Street home. His death sparked protests in which residents violently clashed with police officers equipped with riot gear.
There were no reports of protests after Williams’ shooting. A First Division police officer is expected to be assigned to investigate Williams’ death.
