A 31-year-old mother of two was stabbed to death in front of her five-week-old son at her Diego Martin apartment on Thursday afternoon.Angelique Rojas was found by her landlady at their Temple Street, Diego Martin, home with multiple stab wounds to the backShe was one of two people who were murdered in west Trinidad between Thursday afternoon and yesterday morning.
According to reports, around 3 pm, the landlady arrived home and found Rojas' five-year-old daughter playing in the yard alone. The woman knocked on Rojas' apartment to tell her about her daughter but received no reply.She told police that she thought Rojas was at work and decided to take the child into her home. She said about an hour later she heard the baby's cries coming from Rojas' apartment. Police said the landlady found this strange and decided to use her spare key to gain access to the apartment.
When she did, she found Rojas lying facedown in the living room with several stab wounds to the back. Rojas was naked.She found Rojas' newborn son sitting in a pram near his mother's body.The child was unhurt. Western Division police led by ASP Williams and Insp Thomas arrived on the scene soon after.Rojas was pronounced dead on the scene by a district medical officer.Investigators said the apartment was ransacked and believed that Rojas' attacker searched it after fatally stabbing her.
However, they were unable to confirm if she was robbed.Police said there was evidence that Rojas struggled with her attacker.Rojas was employed as an aesthetician at a spa at Long Circular Mall, St James.Rojas' husband was at work at the time. He was questioned by investigators when he arrived home.Homicide detectives had not established a motive for the murder up to late yesterday.
WP Sgt Bacchus of the Homicide Bureau is probing Rojas' murder. In the other incident, 46-year-old Phineas Anderson was shot dead at his Peter Charles Street, Four Roads, Diego Martin, home between Thursday night and yesterday morning.
Police said around 7.15 am, one of Anderson's relatives visited him at his home. He got no response when he knocked on the door and decided to enter through a opened door at the back of the house. Police said the relative found Anderson lying on his bed with several gunshot wounds to the chest. His head was covered with a bed sheet, police said.Homicide detectives said Anderson was well known to police and was recently arrested for a sexual offence. They said his murder has been classified as gang-related.
In an unrelated incident, a 26-year-old woman remain warded in hospital after being shot in her foot near her apartment in east Port-of-Spain, yesterday afternoon.Police said around 2 pm, Kera Taylor Innis was sitting on the pavement near to her Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain, apartment when she heard several gunshots. Innis was shot once in her right foot and was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment.Investigators from the Besson Street Police Station said Innis was not the target of the shooting.
