A policeman who allegedly used a stone to smash the windscreen of a car, injuring his former mother-in-law and another person appeared in court yesterday.Constable Shawn Paul was on Sunday night granted $100,000 bail by a Justice of the Peace at the San Fernando Police Station.He appeared before San Fernando magistrate Annette McKenzie to answer three charges yesterday.
Paul, who has seven years service and was last attached to the Cunupia Police Station, was arrested last Thursday.He was charged with maliciously damaging a car causing $3,400 in damage and two counts of maliciously wounding Sherry Lewis and Shaheed Ali.
The incident is alleged to have taken place last Thursday at Massyland Road, Gasparillo.The police complainant, PC Ramdial, brought the stone allegedly used in the attack to court.
Court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan did not object to bail but requested Paul be warned to stay away from the alleged victims.The magistrate ordered him to have no communication with thems, in any form, including text messages, e-mail or sign language. The prosecution made partial disclosure, including the defendant's interview notes and the medical reports for both alleged victims to Paul's attorney.
Seedan said the file has to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a state attorney to be appointed to prosecute the case.The matter was adjourned to January 21.
