Gunmen from Beetham Gardens, Port-of-Spain, yesterday attempted to rob a stranded motorist and opened fire on him along the Beetham Highway.A car with several tourists from El Salvador and Panama was also shot at during the incident. Police said luckily no one was injured.Police said around 1 pm, a 39-year-old Arima man was driving his white Almera along the highway when he got a bad drive in the vicinity of the Beetham Landfill.
The motorist parked his car on the road shoulder when he was confronted by several men who attempted to rob him. His attackers shot at his vehicle.Officers from the Besson Street Police Station responded but were unable to arrest the suspects.The victims were taken to the police station where they are assisting the police with investigations.
In a release yesterday Minister of National Security Gary Griffith said in the coming days motorists will see an increase in police visibility on the Beetham Highway and in the not too distant future the construction of a guard booth in the vicinity of the Beetham Landfill.
