Gun­men from Beetham Gar­dens, Port-of-Spain, yes­ter­day at­tempt­ed to rob a strand­ed mo­torist and opened fire on him along the Beetham High­way.A car with sev­er­al tourists from El Sal­vador and Pana­ma was al­so shot at dur­ing the in­ci­dent. Po­lice said luck­i­ly no one was in­jured.Po­lice said around 1 pm, a 39-year-old Ari­ma man was dri­ving his white Almera along the high­way when he got a bad dri­ve in the vicin­i­ty of the Beetham Land­fill.

The mo­torist parked his car on the road shoul­der when he was con­front­ed by sev­er­al men who at­tempt­ed to rob him. His at­tack­ers shot at his ve­hi­cle.Of­fi­cers from the Besson Street Po­lice Sta­tion re­spond­ed but were un­able to ar­rest the sus­pects.The vic­tims were tak­en to the po­lice sta­tion where they are as­sist­ing the po­lice with in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

In a re­lease yes­ter­day Min­is­ter of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Gary Grif­fith said in the com­ing days mo­torists will see an in­crease in po­lice vis­i­bil­i­ty on the Beetham High­way and in the not too dis­tant fu­ture the con­struc­tion of a guard booth in the vicin­i­ty of the Beetham Land­fill.
