A 31-year-old woman from Wallerfield became the country's latest road fatality after she crashed her car into a utility pole near her home, early yesterday morning.
Police said around 2.20 am, Sherry-Ann Charles, of Nicaragua Road, Wallerfield, was heading east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, when she lost control of her car at the Demerara Road intersection.
Charles' Hyundai Elantra veered right and collided with a utility pole positioned at the median of the highway. Upon impact, Charles was catapulted through the windscreen and landed on the road.
Charles' front seat passenger, Ricky Sylvester, also of Wallerfield, sustained serious injuries in the crash. Fire Services and Emergency Health Services (EHS) personnel arrived on the scene shortly after and took the duo to the Arima Health Facility. Charles was pronounced dead on arrival.
Sylvester was stabilised and transfered to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where he remained warded in a stable condition, up to late yesterday.
Police believe that Charles was not wearing her seat belt.
