Fisherman Nicholas Deonarinesingh planned to spend New Year's Day with his family, but while driving to pick them up from a relative's home he died in a horrific crash. As such, Deonarinesingh's family spent most of yesterday making funeral preparations instead of celebrating the start of a new year.
Investigators said around 11.35 pm on Tuesday, Deonarinesingh, 23, of Isaac Trace, Mon Diablo, was driving a white three-tonne Isuzu van along Rochard Road, Penal, when he lost control and slammed into an electricity pole. He was found slumped behind the steering wheel. His brother Anand said they were at home when they got the call that Deonarinesingh was involved in an accident."When I got there he was already dead. He had injuries on his face and shoulder," Anand said.
He added that Deonarinesingh never drank alcohol and was always careful on the road."He knew that it wasn't the best idea to be on the roads on Old Year's night but we don't know what made him do this," Anand said.He explained that Deonarinesingh's common-law wife, Alice Ramkhalawan, and their two children, Justin, three and nine-month-old Kate, had gone to spend Old Year's with their grandmother in Moruga.
Anand said Deonarinesingh was on his way to pick up his family when the tragedy struck. An autopsy has been scheduled for today at the Forensic Science Centre, St James.Acting Sgt Seejattan of the Penal Police Station is continuing investigations.
