Four people were arrested for selling fireworks on New Year's Eve in Arima.Police said the four vendors were arrested at Woodford, Queen and Green Streets, in the Eastern Borough. They were expected to appear before an Arima magistrate yesterday. The arrests came in the wake of several warnings from the police to the public reminding them of offences under the Explosives Act and Summary Offences Act.
The warning came as a result of complaints by citizens about the indiscriminate use of fireworks during the New Year's and Christmas Day celebrations. However, police said no one was fined for setting off fireworks.Senior officers said they were not "bombarded" with calls or complaints as they had been in the past few years, but police responded to several calls of noise and disturbances in several communities.Selling fireworks without a licence is an offence and carries a maximum fine of $1,000.
