During 2013 the focus was on all-out elegance, a nod to conservatism, with more full coverage dresses and a warm welcome of colour, volume and texture. The styles this year will be more modern, streamlined and with a leaning towards dramatic back views.
Here are a few more predictions for 2014's wedding style:
1. Art-deco inspired–Bridal style will continue taking a nod from the Art Deco design style of the 1920s. This style encompassed bold, geometric shapes and lines (which were often repetitive) and designs such as: the sunburst pattern and chevron (a zig zag repetitive pattern). Heavily beaded dresses and an abundance of crystals and feathers were popular on dresses from this era. Designers such as Badgley Mischka and Naeem Khan showed dresses for 2014 inspired by the 1920s.
2. Mini-love–Hemlines will be creeping up in 2014 as we see more tea-length dresses and even mini-dresses. Designers such as Ines de Santo, Reem Acra, Marchesa and Carolina Herrera all showed dresses that bared the legs.
3. Bridal trousers–Yes...this year we have seen bridal jumpsuits and pantsuits from Temperley of London and Rosa Clara, to name a few. Of course, this trend is more suited to the unconventional bride, or perhaps to a destination bride who wants more practicality.
4. Hello halter–The halter neckline will be making a comeback in 2014 as an alternative to showing skin rather than the perpetual favourite, the sweetheart or strapless neckline.
5. Colour–Pantone's colour of the year for 2014 is a pinky-purple colour called Radiant Orchid. In fact, the colour pink will be everywhere in 2014. Even Vera Wang, the famous bridal gown designer brought out the majority of her Fall 2014 collection in shades of pink, deep coral and peach. We will also see more gold-hued gowns and touches of pale blue and black on dresses in 2014.
6. Gloves–long, black leather gloves were seen in Vera Wang's Spring 2014 collection. No doubt, some of today's edgier brides may find them appealing. Oscar de la Renta also showed gloves, although they were white lace.
7. Gown details–Other elements that will stay on trend for 2014 will be long, lace sleeves, dramatic back views on gowns, backless gowns, mermaid silhouettes and illusion necklines.
8. "The dress change"–More brides will be changing from their long gowns into shorter cocktail dresses for the reception party, with new accessories and jewelry in tow!
9. Bridesmaid dresses–Coloured lace will be seen on bridesmaid dresses in 2014. Also trending will be the concept of "two-pieces." These separates will be sought after, as bridesmaids choose to pair up their favourite skirt silhouette (pencil, circle, A-line or trumpet) with a bodice of their choice. Will you be rocking any of these trends in 2014?
