On Wednesday some schools and business places in the Couva area had to be abandoned for the day because of an unbearable smell, the identity of which is still to be determined. With the Point Lisas Estate, which can emit dangerous chemicals on an unsuspecting public in the area, and the NGC in close proximity, from which, God forbid, gas emissions can be leaked, my question is whether anything has been put in place in that industrial area, to evacuate workers, school children and residents, in the event of a disaster. Many of these emissions can have fatal consequences and the gridlock that exists on Rivulet Road and the Southern Main Road does not lend itself to the kind of panic flight that would ensue. Many lives would be lost I fear. I am asking the relevant government authorities, to immediately put in place some plan for evacuation. Evacuation drills from time to time in this hazardous area need to be done.
