Janus Alfonso, described as a gang leader, was shot and killed by the police on Friday morning.Alfonso's mother Roseanne, 48, has accused the police of executing her son in cold blood, while he slept at her Clarke Trace, Enterprise, home.Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham said he and a party of officers went to execute a warrant for the arrest of Alfonso, 28, when they were fired at.He said the police returned fire which resulted in Alfonso's death.
The police said Alfonso was a well known car thief who had several matters pending in the court. However, in an interview at the family's home, Roseanne, a security guard, denied the events as described by the police.Roseanne said the eldest of her three children, was asleep on a mattress on the floor in the front bedroom of her house. She said she was awakened by gunshots around 4.30 am. She was confronted by police officers who told her to move. She said she then saw the police lift her son's body and carry it to a vehicle.
Roseanne said she began bawling and screaming, alerting the neighbourhood.Saying she never knew her son to be involved in anything illegal, Roseanne said even if he was involved, the police did not have to use that fatal approach. She said they could have arrested him and taken him in for questioning."They did not have to kill him. The boy was lying on the mattress, sleeping on the floor and the police executed him in cold blood," the bereaved mother said.During the exercise 25 other people were arrested for various offences.
