Criminal Bar: Karl was gentle giant
The Criminal Bar Association has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late Karl Hudson-Phillips, QC. In a statement on Tuesday the association described him as a “beloved member of the local and regional Bar.” It added: “He was a feared and respected advocate who was greatly admired for his intellectual prowess, wit and charm. His oratory captivated and mesmerised many jurors. “His passion and love for the law never dwindled, although he would teasingly state with a twinkle in his eyes that in light of his age he was in ‘the departure lounge.’ It also described him as a “gentle giant” who always had time to listen and provide meaningful guidance to anyone who sought his advice.
“He was genuinely interested in helping young attorneys understand their role and encouraged them to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the highest traditions of the Bar.” The release said at a time when “we, as a society, continue to struggle with declining standards, Karl Hudson-Phillips, QC, epitomised the gold standard.” The association said his loss was immeasurable both to the profession and to the society as a whole. “We are deeply saddened by his loss but give thanks for the indelible mark he has left on all those who were privileged enough to have met him,” the association added. Hudson-Phillips, 80, a former judge of the International Criminal Court and attorney and shaper of politics, died in his sleep last week Thursday in London, where he had gone to celebrate his son’s birthday.
