Port-of-Spain and a wide area of north Trinidad, stretching from St Augustine to Cocorite, was left with dry taps yesterday after a Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) 48-inch main was ruptured in Trincity. In an interview with CNC 3 last night, WASA's head of corporate communications, Ellen Lewis, said around 2.30 pm, the Caroni North Trunk Main was ruptured by a private contractor doing work at the site for the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure's Churchill-Roosevelt Highway widening project in Trincity.
She said WASA employees were on the scene up to late yesterday and were trying to determine the exact cause of the rupture."The contractors and the ministry are aware as to where our pipelines are. Our pipelines are clearly marked and identified, so we are unclear as to what has led to this incident," Lewis said. She assured customers that the authority was working hard to ensure its water supply was restored within 48 hours.
"We are moving as best as we can to make sure that customers are aware and they do what they can on their end to manage and sustain their supply. We will ensure on our end that we remedy, repair and restore the supply as quickly as possible," Lewis said. She said a truck-borne supply would be provided for schools, hospitals and homes for the elderly until the problem was rectified.Customers seeking additional information from WASA are asked to contact its customer service centre at 800-4420.
