All Stars in front for Panorama title
Eight-time Panorama champions Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars, playing the Clive Telemaque/Shirlaine Hendrickson composition Excitement, amassed 274 points to lead the large conventional bands at Panorama preliminaries competition. Republic Bank Exodus gained 271 points for Pelham Goddard’s arrangement of Pan Is Carnival to earn second place. Sharing third berth were three bands — WITCO Desperadoes, Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove and bpTT Renegades — with an aggregate of 263 points each. These bands played Spankin’, Jump High and In De Minor respectively. The first five steelbands have all copped the National Panorama title over the years. Arrangers for four of the five top steelbands — Leon “Smooth” Edwards, Pelham Goddard, Robert Greenidge, and Len “Boogsie” Sharpe — have achieved this feat. The only arranger who has not won a national title is bpTT Renegades arranger Duvonne Stewart.
A total of 11 Large conventional steelbands have qualified for the National Panorama Medium and Large Finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, on March, 1. Adjudicators in this category were Lambert Phillip, Stephanie Power, Roger Saldinha, Lennox London, Jeanette Johnson and Andy Chichester. In the Medium Bands category, ten passed the judges’ muster to earn a play in the finals. Judges in this category are Joanne Ragbir, Richard Pierre, Junior Howell, Joslynne Sealey, Sherry Ann Saunders and Marceline Peters. Michelle Huggins-Watts, who is arranging for Valley Harps, is the only female musician to make the grade in either category for the national finals. The results were released a little after 11 pm on Sunday night after final performer, RBC Redemption Sound Setters, struck the final note in the competition at 10.20 pm.
