Recaptured prisoner assisting police in murder investigations

Con­vict­ed killer David John Pierre, who was re­cap­tured on Thurs­day af­ter nine months on the run, has been hand­ed over to homi­cide of­fi­cers in­ves­ti­gat­ing the mur­der of his broth­er Do­minic Pierre.Pierre, 34, of Edoo Trace, Suc­cess Vil­lage, Laven­tille, who es­caped from Car­erra Is­land last June, was tak­en yes­ter­day by homi­cide of­fi­cers to as­sist in their in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to Do­minic's mur­der.

Do­minic, a Laven­tille taxi dri­ver, was found with chop wounds about the body at the home of his broth­er Nigel Dra­go, of San Spring Road, Macaulay, Clax­ton Bay on No­vem­ber 16. Three days lat­er he died at San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal from his in­juries.In­ves­ti­ga­tors told the T&T Guardian Pierre will re­main in po­lice cus­tody un­til in­quires are com­plet­ed.On Thurs­day at 2 pm, po­lice from the Mara­bel­la and Gas­par­il­lo Po­lice Sta­tions went to a house at New City Street, Mara­bel­la and held him.

Pierre was sen­tenced to death in 2002 for mur­der­ing a San­gre Grande taxi-dri­ver, 52-year-old Chanker Mooti­lal on Feb­ru­ary 28, 2000 at To­co Main Road, Ve­ga de Oropouche. His sen­tence was com­mut­ed to life in 2003 af­ter a Privy Coun­cil rul­ing that the death sen­tence was no longer manda­to­ry.
