Akiela Gill, the three-month-old baby whose lifeless body was found at her father's home in Sea Lots on Good Friday, choked on her own vomit, an autopsy has revealed. The post-mortem performed by forensic pathologist Dr Hughvon Des Vignes at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday has led homicide detectives to conclude that there was no foul play involved in her death.
As such the child's 27-year-old mother Nicole Manswell and her father Joel Gill, 36, have been cleared by investigators and have since been released from police custody. According to police reports, around 11 pm on Friday, Manswell and Joel got into a row after which Manswell left the home.Police said Manswell left the child in the care of her three older brothers ages 11, seven and two. When she returned home the next morning, she realised Akiela was missing.
She questioned her eldest son who told her that Joel had passed by while she was out and took the toddler with him.By the time Manswell made her way to Joel's one-bedroom home, located a short distance away, she found Akiela lying unconscious next to her father. The child was reportedly frothing at the mouth. Officers of the Guard and Emergency Branch arrived on the scene soon after and detained the couple. Akiela was pronounced dead on the scene by District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Robert Naidike.
Akiela's case made newspaper headlines as it came five days after Barry Karamath, 34, poisoned his two-year old daughter Ke'anna Mayers and ten-month old son Omari, before killing himself at Mora Trace, Matura.Detectives of the Region One Homicide Bureau and the Besson Street CID are continuing investigations.
