I could write about the experience of riding on the fast ferry and never run out of things to say. What would we do without this inter-island workhorse?Loved by some for its convenience, affordability and daily sailings, hated by some mainly for the length of time it takes and the seasickness it causes them, the ferry dutifully transports thousands of us and our vehicles and goods back and forth, across sometimes challenging waters, in varying weather conditions. Tobago to Trinidad...Trinidad to Tobago...multiplied by 365 and more.
Once out on the open seas, the view through the window can reveal amazing natural wonders. For two of my friends, the visual highlight of a recent ferry ride was: "We saw a rainbow and a large turtle."Another reported via Facebook: "Back from a day trip to Trini today...Sailed down on the ferry and was enchanted to catch glimpses of flying fish breaking the surface of the sea from time to time! Thrilling sight."
I often like watching the churning white water behind the vessel, like the long trail of a wedding dress adorned by shimmering rainbows as sunrays meet sea spray. On a recent sailing back to Tobago from Trinidad, I sat in the area in front of the cafeteria–a prime vantage point for observing the diverse multitude of travelers. It is perhaps no coincidence that Tobago Fashion Weekend was just a few days away.
