A 34-year-old gardener from Arima was chopped to death in front of his wife when a group of men invaded his home early yesterday.Police said around 2.20 am Devanand Ramdass and his wife were asleep at their home at Blanchisseuse Road, Arima, when they were awaken by loud banging on their front door.As the couple got out of bed to check on the disturbance, two men with cutlasses entered their bedroom.
Ramdass's wife told police the intruders pushed her aside and then attacked her husband, chopping him numerous times as she watched helplessly.As Ramdass loss conciousness, the men threatened his wife and left the house.Police arrived within minutes, but Ramdass was pronounced dead on the scene by a District Medical Officer.
Although his relatives said they could not think of a reason for the attack, Homicide detectives said they believe it was more than likely committed by someone whom Ramdass knew or had had a dispute with recently.A concrete motive for the murder is yet to be established.Detectives of the Region Two Homicide Bureau are continuing investigations.
Retired police commits suicide
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a retired police inspector, who is believed to have committed suicide at his Mt Hope home on Tuesday night.Around 8.30 pm, Jules George, 56, and his 60-year-old wife Aloysia were at their apartment at Gregale Drive, Breezy Heights, Mt Hope.
George's wife told police shortly before 9 pm she was in her bedroom and heard a gunshot. When she went in the living room to check on her husband she found him lying on a chair with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. His licensed gun was on the floor next to his body.Investigators said since retiring almost six years ago, George had worked at Parliament and in the security department of the United States Embassy.Investigations are continuing.
