The second man killed by police in a shootout in Couva last Thursday has been identified as 28-year-old Glen Bernard.He and Beresford Assoon were killed at McBean Village, Couva.
Assoon, 28, of Sangre Grande, and Bernard, 28, of La Horquetta, had moments earlier robbed a woman of her Nissan Navarra at Roystonia, Couva.
Police were called and the robbers crashed the van before escaping in a Toyota Corolla.Around 9.40 pm they were cornered at McBean Village and tried to escape by running into a bush. They were pursued and shot. One man escaped.Police said Assoon was the leader of a car-stealing ring which targeted women.He was accused in the kidnapping of Keina Calliste, the daughter of calypsonian Leroy "Black Stalin" Calliste, in February 2011.
He was also accused of robbing Calliste of her $65,000 silver Nissan Almera, $500 cellular phone, a laptop, $1,000 in cash, identification and bank cards.He was also accused of robbing Kashma Maraj of her $75,000 silver Toyota Corolla, $2,000 cellular phone, $1,000 and ID documents at Mon Repos, San Fernando, the year before.Last year he was accused of robbing another woman of her car and raping her.A relative of Bernard yesterday told the media at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, she was surprised he would be involved in car theft since he could not drive.The autopsies on both men, done by Dr Valery Alexandrov, showed they had been shot multiple times and were shot while facing the police.
