A 30-year-old suspected car thief, who was being hunted by police for several months, was held in St Joseph on Sunday.
According to reports, around 12.30 pm St Joseph police, led by Sgt Rennie Katwaroo, were on patrol along Riverside Road in St Joseph when they noticed the driver of a white Nissan B15 behaving suspiciously when he saw them.
Police followed the car, which was heading towards Maracas/St Joseph, and eventually stopped it near Abercromby Street. After checks were made with the Stolen Vehicles Squad, police learnt the car was reported stolen from Price Plaza, Chaguanas, on Saturday, and the driver was wanted in connection with several car jackings and car thefts in central Trinidad.
The driver, who has addresses in Arima, Sangre Grande and Tobago, was taken to the St Joseph Police Station where he remained detained yesterday.Investigators believe the suspect was taking the car to a secluded garage in Maracas/St Joseph where it would have been scrapped and its parts later sold.
The suspect is expected to appear in several identification parades before being charged. The stolen car will be returned to its owner after the suspect appears in the Tunapuna Magistrates Court later this week.Investigations are continuing.
