An inmate at the Golden Grove remand prison, in Arouca, claims he was severly beaten by masked prison officers on Sunday.
His relatives are now calling for a probe into the incident.
Wayne Mohammed went to the prison on Monday to visit his son, Ryan Mohammed, 22, only to find out that his son was beaten and left with a blood-shot right eye, swollen face and head injuries.
Ryan was remanded in prison for the past two weeks for possession of marijuana. His next court appearance is on February 4.
Speaking with the T&T Guardian yesterday, Mohammed said his son told him that at about 11 pm a team of prison officers, wearing masks, entered his cell, which is located at the north wing and began beating him after he told the officer that he could not put on a light in the cell.
"Ryan said that the officer tell him to put on the light but he explained that it is a contraption with wires and stuff and he really didn't know how to put on the light. So he said he tell the masked officer that he didn't know how to put on the light and that was when the officer, he said, started to cuff him all over his face and beat him on the head and eye with a baton.
"Right now my son's face is swollen and his right eye is bleeding internally because I could see the blood seeping through.
"Inmates are supposed to be treated like human beings at the end of the day and are not supposed to be badly beaten like that.
"If something happens and inmates are killed in there by the hands of officers then expect a lie to be made up in a bid to hide the truth. There is too much stupidness going on and it needs to be brought to the public domain. Let the prison officers know that they cannot abuse people just like that," he added.
Mohammed said he was going to seek legal advice on the matter.
A prison source yesterday confirmed the incident and disclosed that Ryan was attended to by the infirmary's medical doctor.
