`
Mohan Jaikaran was a pioneering businessman in the media and entertainment sector, and a philanthropist with an eye for talent.
These were the words used by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to describe the chairman and founder of WIN Communications, following his death at his home on Sunday afternoon.
Jaikaran passed away at his West Moorings home after ailing for some time.
In a media release yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said she was deeply saddened to learn of Jaikaran's death.
"On my own behalf and on behalf of the government of T&T I extend condolences to Mr. Jaikaran's family and to his business associates at WINTV and Massala Radio 101.1 fm."
Persad-Bissessar described Jaikaran as a dedicated patriot who also served as Vice Chairman at Caribbean Airlines Limited until June 25, 2013.
"He was a pioneering businessman in the media and entertainment sector, and a philanthropist with an eye for talent. He discovered many T&T and Caribbean performers and gave them their first break.
"He donated hugely to charity and was a community builder focusing on local talent and indigenous culture. He was a benefactor to the cultural industries."
Jaikaran was also described as a respected media executive and entrepreneur who established his business credentials in New York but always remained close to his homeland.
"He also expanded the broadcast reach of WINTV to Canada and Great Britain, and had planned to enter the United States broadcasting market in the near future.
"T&T and the region have suffered a severe blow with the passing of Mr. Jaikaran. He was a humble man who had a passion for helping people while seeking no rewards for his kindness." said Persad-Bissessar.
The Media Association of T&T (MATT) also expressed its sorrow and condolences on Jaikaran's death.
In an online release yesterday, the association extended its support to Jaikaran's friends and family and his colleagues at the network that he founded, WIN Communications.
"Mr Jaikaran was a respected businessman in T&T and in New York City where he was based for most of his adult life. He was a director of the International Soca Monarch competition and a deputy chairman at Caribbean Airlines. He once described it as a blessing to give back to society by providing jobs in New York and Trinidad," the release said.
"Mr Jaikaran's influence and impact on the broadcast media landscape in T&T has been profound and inspiring. His television and radio frequencies have filled a gap in local Indian programming. WIN Communications has contributed greatly to unearthing young, local broadcasting talent and expanding the media industry in a multi-cultural society. He was a noted supporter of the arts and culture in Trinidad and Tobago."
