"A drug deal gone sour" is one of the theories police are probing in the murder of Anthony Merrick Saroop, who was gunned down at a known South Oropouche drug block on Wednesday night.Investigators said Saroop, 25, of Circular Road, Claxton Bay, frequently sold drugs to addicts in an area where police had made several raids recently.
However, residents along Agriculture Road, where he was killed, said no one knew him.According to a police report, residents heard several gunshots around 10.50 pm and on checking found Saroop bleeding heavily on the road from gunshot wounds.A team of South Western Division police, led by Insp Anderson Pariman and Insp Peter Ramdeen, responded.
District Medical Officer Dr Okwee examined the body and found gunshot wounds to the head, neck and groin area. His body was taken to the San Fernando mortuary for identification and it was only late yesterday that relatives came forward. It was then transferred to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, where an autopsy is expected to be performed.
