Independent Liberal Party (ILP) leader Jack Warner was released from the Port-of-Spain State Prison after posting bail more than an hour ago.
Warner, who was indicted in the United States on Wednesday for eight corruption charges arising out of his two decade career in FIFA, spent 24 hours at the Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, before his friends and supporters managed to get approval for the $2.5 million in bail he was granted by Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar.
The T&T Guardian was reliably informed that the deed for a property being used for his bail was rejected three times by the Clerk of the Peace 3 at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates' Court between Wednesday and yesterday afternoon.
Around 3 pm today, Warner's lawyers went to the prison with Justice of the Peace Ibrahim Ali, who approved Warner's bail.
Scores of media personnel and ILP supporters who had gathered since early yesterday morning to catch a glimpse of Warner leaving were left disappointed as he was driven away around 5 pm in a heavily tinted ambulance.
As he left the prison Ali explained that Warner was exhausted and dehydrated and did not feel well enough to engage the public. He however claimed Warner was in good spirits.
Ali's explanation was not accepted by Warner's supporters who openly expressed their displeasure.
"He don't care about us. We waiting here whole day in the hot sun. He could have stopped for two minutes," a female supporter wearing a ILP T-shirt shouted as she walked away from the court shaking her head.
The T&T Guardian understands that Warner was not taken to the hospital but was rather allowed to switch to a private vehicle which carried him to his Arouca home. He is expected to attend and address an ILP meeting in Chaguanas in a couple hours.
Warner is expected to reappear in court for the continuation of his extradition proceedings on July 9.
