United Nations (UN)Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said T&T is a regional leader in implementing the UN Post 2015 Developmental Agenda, according to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister on July 2.
The new post-2015 development agenda builds on the Millennium Development Goals which are eight anti-poverty targets that the world committed to achieving by 2015.
The Secretary General congratulated the countryon having surpassed several developmental goals.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar held bilateral discussions with Ban Ki-moon on the second day ofthe 36th meeting of the CaricomHeads of Government conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, themed"Vibrant Societies, Resilient Economies: A Partnership for Implementation".
He alsoasked for a central location to house all UN offices in T&T, a request supported by Persad-Bissessar.
The PM and Ban Ki-Moon also spoke about climate issues, with the UN Secretary General highlighting the importance of the Green Climate Fund.
The financial target of the fund is $100 billion of which ten per cent has been achieved thus far, the release said.
Persad-Bissessar asked Ban Ki-Moon to consider whether some of this fund could be aligned to the Caribbean Energy Fund, which is being led by T&T for Caribbean sustainability and cleaner energy.
She also spoke on the Green Economy initiative of the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development.
The aim of this initiative is to focus on improved human and social well being while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
The PM also made mention of T&T's thrust to utilise CNG for public sector vehicles.
These strategies, she said, are part of the bridge between the present heavy reliance on the energy sector and the diversified, sustainably developed, robust economy of the future.
