Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi said the former People's Partnership Government spent almost $1 billion in legal fees during their five years in office.
In his contribution to the budget debate this morning, the AG said legal fees for 60 out of 107 state enterprises amounted $292 million while four out of 22 ministries reported that millions had been spent in legal operations.
Al-Rawi told the Lower House: "The figure–with 47 state enterprises yet to report, 18 ministries yet to report–is $892,607,271. Let me put it closer, if you add the $10 million error, you are at $900 million in legal fees spent over five years."
He said bills from just 11 lawyers amounted to $245 million. With giving their names, the AG detailed the amounts received by each of the 11 lawyers: "Lawyer number one: $58,167,495.93. Lawyer number two $35,818,703.16. Lawyer number three: $13,383,000. Lawyer number four: $26,574,235. Lawyer number five: $24,541,670. Lawyer number six $13,773,402.58. Lawyer number seven: $16,565,083.65. Lawyer number 9, skipping a bit, $50,073,040."
