A 28-year-old businessman from St Augustine has been released on bail after appearing in court on Monday in relation to a hit and run accident on Saturday morning which claimed the life of 68-year-old Una Belgrave.
Avinash Khanai, of Orange Grove Road, St Augustine, was placed on $25,000 after appearing in the Chaguanas Magistrate's Court charged with refusing to submit to a breathalyser test and for fleeing the scene of an accident. He was not called upon to plead to the charges. As part of the conditions of his bail he was ordered to report to police twice weekly for the duration of his case.
Belgrave, of Church Street, Chaguanas, and three persons were driving in the south bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway when around 2.30 am a black Mercedes Benz crashed into their Mitsubishi Lancer while attempting to overtake on the shoulder near to the Calvary Revival Deliverance Temple. The driver drove off leaving Belgrave and her friends injured in the vehicle.
The friends were taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility where Belgrave died while receiving treatment. Two of the friends sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged while the forth Gershwin Charles, 49, of St Thomas Village, Chaguanas, remained warded in a critical condition in hospital, up to late yesterday.
Khanai reportedly surrendered to police in the company of his lawyer several hours after the accident.
Khanai will reappear in court on December 16.
