Man slapped with $10,700 fine

Four years af­ter he got in­to an al­ter­ca­tion with Es­tate Po­lice of­fi­cers at the Air­ports Au­thor­i­ty over the park­ing of his ve­hi­cle in a re­strict­ed area, Kwame Trim was found guilty and fined of $10,700, ear­li­er this week.

In de­fault of the fine, Trim of Priz­gar Road, San Juan, will serve two months hard labour. Trim, who ap­peared be­fore Ari­ma Court Mag­is­trate Deb­by-Ann Bas­saw, had orig­i­nal­ly plead­ed not guilty to eight charges aris­ing out of the in­ci­dent on Ju­ly 15, 2012.

How­ev­er, a full tri­al, which be­gan in March 2015, end­ed on Ju­ly 7, 2016, with Mag­is­trate Bas­saw find­ing him guilty on all eight counts. Spe­cial pros­e­cu­tor, Sean Caz­abon ap­peared on be­half of the State, while at­tor­neys Reynold Wal­dropt and Jeron Joseph ap­peared on be­half of Trim.

Ac­cord­ing to the ev­i­dence pre­sent­ed in court, around 6.45 am on Ju­ly 15, 2012, Trim parked his ve­hi­cle in a re­strict­ed area at the Pi­ar­co In­ter­na­tion­al Air­port. He re­fused to re­move the ve­hi­cle when re­quest­ed to do so.

He got in­to an al­ter­ca­tion with the of­fi­cers, fol­low­ing which he was slapped with eight charges in­clud­ing, as­sault on Air­ports Au­thor­i­ty Es­tate Po­lice Of­fi­cers Braith­waite and Perkins in the ex­e­cu­tion of their du­ties, re­sist­ing of­fi­cers in the ex­e­cu­tion of du­ties, ob­scene lan­guage, breach of a no park­ing sign, as well as fail­ing to pro­duce a dri­ving per­mit and in­sur­ance.
