Cops kill prison escapee

Just over two months af­ter Shel­don Lendore es­caped prison cus­tody, he was shot dead dur­ing an al­leged shootout with po­lice yes­ter­day.

Po­lice gave lit­tle in­for­ma­tion about Lendore's death last evening, save to say that he was be­ing pur­sued by of­fi­cers short­ly af­ter 5 pm in the La Brea Dis­trict be­fore he was killed in a shootout with them.

Lendore, 37, of Cap-de-Ville, Point Fortin, was in re­mand af­ter ap­pear­ing in court on sev­er­al charges of firearm and rob­bery of­fences. Po­lice de­scribed him as a dan­ger­ous crim­i­nal with his­to­ry of vi­o­lent crimes and sev­er­al con­vic­tions to his name.

On Au­gust 23 Lendore com­plained of feel­ing un­well, suf­fer­ing from light head­ed­ness and cough­ing. He was tak­en to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal and lat­er trans­ferred to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex in Mount Hope. He was then tak­en for a ex­am­i­na­tion and then ad­mit­ted to Ward 5 where he was hand­cuffed.

The prison of­fi­cer as­signed to guard him re­port­ed that he es­caped the next day with his hand­cuffs still on. Lendore had not been seen again un­til yes­ter­day and po­lice be­lieve he chose to re­turn to Point Fortin, where his daugh­ter lives.
