The constituency of Siparia, which is represented in the Parliament by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is in line to become the next and fourth Borough in T&T.
This is among a bag of goodies Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and other Government ministers rolled out when the People's National Movement (PNM) bandwagon rolled into Siparia on Thursday night in support of its nine candidates contesting the local government elections for the Siparia Regional Corporation.
Rowley also spoke about the revitalisation of the energy and agricultural sectors in Fyzabad and Siparia to position these two key communities to grow. He said there was the potential to get back into industrial development which they are in the process of exploring and to bring some of the land into food production that could support the school feeding programme and create a downstream export industry.
Rowley said he believed the community of Siparia could benefit from local government reform, patterned after the Tobago House of Assembly model, which his administration intends to roll out over the next four years.
"It is my expectation that this is the next community in T&T that would rise to Borough status and you will elect a Mayor in Siparia. You have all the makings of a township and you have such tremendous and wonderful history," Rowley told cheering supporters.
He said the community has all the components to accomplish this feat, including the infrastructure, residential component, schools, hospital and health facilities.
