Teachers and parents of students attending the San Fernando Seventh Day Adventist Primary School expressed outrage yesterday after an intruder entered the girls' washroom, exposed himself and tried to coerce a nine-year-old female student to have oral sex with him.
The incident which took place on Monday has caused some teachers at the co-ed school on Pouchet Street, to withdraw their services and some parents have opted to keep their children at home as they claim this was not an isolated incident.
An emergency meeting is expected to be held today, on the school's compound, where officials from the Ministry of Education would meet with the Parent, Teachers Association (PTA) as well as the representing teachers union to discuss the incident.
President of the T&T Unified Association (TTUTA) Lynsley Doodhai said while he was thankful no child was hurt or sexually assaulted, he was alarmed by the breach of security.
He said it was not the first time an intruder had made his way into the compound but the authorities have failed to implement security measures recommended, in the past, to avoid such incidents.
Doodhai said they have recommended additional security personnel as well as the vertical extension of the wall surrounding the compound or the placement of barbed wire around the perimeter to ward off intruders.
Members of staff said the pervert gained access to the school pretending to be a plumber doing repairs to the girls toilet. Some of the students used the washroom and left, while others left without using the facilities on seeing the man.
The lone security female guard was securing the front of the school at the time, school officials said.
Between 8.30 to 9 am one of the students saw the man peering over the wall while she entered one of the toilets. She left without using it. Another student who saw the man sitting on the toilet seat with his pants down and masturbating, said he used crude and obscene language to make an indecent proposal for her to have oral sex with him.
The child left and at this point, a teacher observed the man, who was dressed in a green long-sleeved jersey and three-quarter pants coming out of the toilet.
She queried from other staff members whether anyone was authorised to do repairs and after being told no, she returned to see the man jumping over the wall and exiting through the yard of a home owner next to the school compound.
A report was made to the San Fernando Police Station and police officers visited the compound, but no arrest has yet been made.
A teacher said there are only two security guards on the compound.
One on the morning shift and another at nights which is inadequate to protect the 300-plus students as well as the 15 members of staff, including principal Yvette Fournelier.
The teacher said they have recommended additional security, including the securing of the fence. Parents have already begun donating funds for the securing of the compound.
