EBC: No date set for Barataria by-election
The ruling PNM is yet to give a date for the by-election in Barataria following the death of PNM councillor Pernell Bruno in September.
PNMites had expected a by-election date to be given at last Sunday’s PNM convention but Prime Minister Keith Rowley didn’t give any.
The Elections and Boundaries Commission yesterday confirmed it had not received any information concerning a by-election for the seat.
Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein couldn’t say when a date would be called. He referred the issue to the party.
PNM Secretariat officials referred the matter to the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation. The latter which indicated the seat has been declared vacant said the leadership would set a date. PNM deputy leader Rohan Sinanan said he didn’t have any information on a by-election date yet.
The Opposition UNC has several people interested in contesting the by-election whenever it’s held, UNC Suruj Rambachan said yesterday, “But we haven’t heard any date yet.”
