Kamla tells Rowley to ‘man up’ to T&T crime problem
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is urging Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to “man-up” to his responsibilities as the prime minister and “stop the blame game.”
This as the Prime Minister pointed fingers at the Opposition for the spiralling crime problem because it did not support the Anti-Gang legislation.
Rowley said the killing of 15-year-old Joshua Andrews and taxi driver Devon Hernandez was “yet another example of lawlessness of the worst kind carried out by groups of persons who come together to plan and execute heinous violent acts against the rest of society. That kind of group is called a gang.”
He said the UNC “have by their actions deliberately and by their words deceitfully, refused to help the country to carry the fight to this wicked, violent and miscreant minority.”
The Anti-Gang legislation was defeated in the House of Representatives last December. The legislation, if enacted, makes gang activity illegal.
But Persad-Bissessar hit back at the Prime Minister saying it was his fault that the Opposition failed to support the legislation, “he tried to bully and intimidate the UNC to support a law that bites into the constitutional rights of citizens without any restriction. Why was he so insistent on the removal of a sunset clause given the immense potential for abuse of power by the state?” she asked.
Persad-Bissessar said there were also “strong objections by the Law Association to the Anti-Gang Bill which the UNC had taken on board.”
The association, she said, had “warned that the legislation was unconstitutional and illegal because it violated fundamental human rights. Is Dr Rowley going to blame the Law Association for these dreadful murders as well?”
She accused the PM of “playing politics,” and said it is “high time” that he “stops blaming, pouting and complaining. It’s time to wake up, man up and start leading because the country is disintegrating.”
