$40,000 bail for driver charged in east PoS protest
A sanitation truck driver, who claimed to have been threatened at gunpoint to dump garbage on the street in east Port-of-Spain during protests earlier this week, has pleaded not guilty to two criminal charges arising out of the incident.
Lance Cupidore, 28, of Cameron Road, Petit Valley, denied any wrongdoing when he appeared before Magistrate Christine Charles in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate Court on two charges of obstructing the free passage of a road and for littering.
Charles regularised the $40,000 bail which Cupidore was granted by a Justice of the Peace after being charged on Thursday night.
He is expected to reappear in court on March 21. If convicted the obstructing charge carries a fine of $200 and up to a month in prison, while the maximum penalty for littering is fine of $4,000 or up to six months in prison.
The dumping of garbage occurred at various locations along Observatory Street on Monday morning, as resident protested the police killing of Akel “Christmas” James earlier in the day.
Cupidore, who is employed by a private company contracted to the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, claimed he was threatened into doing so by armed residents who were protesting.
