A Morvant man, who was charged two months ago with throwing prohibited items into the Port-of-Spain Prison, was granted $250,000 bail after he was finally held by police on Sunday.
According to a media release issued by the T&T Police Service (TTPS), Alex G Edwards, of Never Dirty, Morvant, appeared before Master Indira Chinebass.
His arrest Came following an exercise coordinated by Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro, Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin and ASP Stanley.
Police said between 5 pm and 8.25 pm, the exercise, conducted by Cpl Williams, Cpl Hyde, WPC Joseph and constables Jagram and Bristol, resulted in Edwards’ arrest.
Edwards was accused of throwing prohibited articles into the prison on February 27, June 1, June 10 and July 12.
He was also held and charged with possession of marijuana, which allegedly occurred on August 2.
Guevarro, in the media release, commended the diligent investigations by the team, including the prison officers involved. He said all attempts by criminal elements to smuggle contraband into the nation’s prisons will be intercepted and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“The commissioner said the TTPS stands ready and able alongside its law enforcement partners to maintain the institutional security and integrity of all prisons from outside elements and emerging threats,” the release said.
In justifying the State of Emergency on July 18, Guevarro said there was a plot to murder top state officials, hatched in prison by inmates who were part of an organised crime syndicate, which was being assisted by prison officers.
