The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised that three teenagers be charged in connection with the murder of Kynplyn Sandy, a 34-year-old autistic man who was fatally shot on March 25, 2024.
In an official statement, the Police Service notes the charges recommended by DPP Roger Gaspard include Murder, Possession of Firearm and Possession of Ammunition.
The three suspects are said to be 17, 18 and 19 years of age.
Sandy, of Bamboo Trace, Fairley Street, Tunapuna, was shot dead by a gunman as he sat outside his house.
According to police reports, around 4:50 pm on Monday 25 March 2024, officers received information that led them to Upper Fairley Street, Bamboo Road, Tunapuna. There, the officers discovered a male of African descent lying motionless on his back underneath a concrete and wooden structure, with what appeared to be a gunshot a wound to his head.
At his funeral service, Kynplyn Sandy was described by family and friends as “a joyful presence”, who showed an “over-protectiveness and loving nature towards his siblings”.
Sandy’s elder sister, Onika McKenzie, said her brother’s autism did not stop him from being a compassionate person and having a love for life.
