Two-time Olympian cyclist Njisane Phillip has been granted $300,000 bail and a cash alternative of $30,000 on firearm and marijuana charges.
Phillip appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Armina Deonarinsingh in the San Fernando Charge Court on three charges including Possession of a firearm, Possession of ammunition and Possession of marijuna. He was not called upon to plead to the charges. Phillip was ordered to surrender his Trinidad and Tobago and United States passports and report to the Siparia Police Station every Wednesday as conditions of his bail. He was represented by attorney Cedric Neptune.
Phillip was arrested around 5 pm on Saturday after police stopped a black Toyota Hilux he was driving along the Solomon Hochoy Highway near Gandhi Village in Debe. It is alleged that he was speeding.
While interviewing him, the officer allegedly got a strong scent of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the officers searched the vehicle, it is alleged that they found 62 grammes of marijuana and a firearm with an extended magazine, containing four rounds of 9 mm ammunition. Phillip of Siparia was arrested and taken to the South Highway Patrol Unit in Debe where he was charged by PC Sankar. The matter was adjourned to April 24.
