7 cops arrested over extra duty racket

Five fe­male Spe­cial Re­serve Po­lice Of­fi­cers and a se­nior su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice are among sev­en po­lice of­fi­cers ar­rest­ed by of­fi­cers of the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau for mis­chief in pub­lic of­fice.

In­for­ma­tion reach­ing the Guardian Me­dia con­firmed that the of­fi­cers were ar­rest­ed af­ter a vig­or­ous in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to al­le­ga­tions of fraud­u­lent con­duct in­volv­ing ex­tra du­ty where a rev­enue clerk was al­leged­ly ac­com­mo­dat­ing spruced up claims from of­fi­cers over the Christ­mas 2018 and Car­ni­val 2019 sea­sons.

The of­fi­cers, who are all as­signed to the Traf­fic Branch in Port-of-Spain, were ar­rest­ed be­tween Tues­day night and Wednes­day morn­ing and are be­ing housed in dif­fer­ent po­lice sta­tions along the east/west cor­ri­dor, in­clud­ing Besson Street, Mor­vant, Barataria, San Juan and the St Joseph Po­lice Sta­tions.

Rep­re­sent­ing at­tor­neys for the re­spec­tive of­fi­cers in­clude Pamela El­der SC, Ian Brooks, Brent Win­ter, Ter­ry Boy­er and Fa­reed Ali, who were said to be with their re­spec­tive clients up un­til late Wednes­day night.

PC Joe­field is the lead in­ves­ti­ga­tor in the case.

One of­fi­cer was for­mal­ly in­ter­viewed on Wednes­day and the oth­er in­ter­views are ex­pect­ed to con­tin­ue Thurs­day.
