$75,000 bail for cop charged with accepting bribe

A po­lice of­fi­cer has been placed on $75,000 bail af­ter he ap­peared be­fore a Port-of-Spain mag­is­trate charged with mis­be­hav­iour in pub­lic of­fice.

PC Neil Toolaram, 39, of #8 Boodram Street, En­ter­prise, Ch­agua­nas, was ar­rest­ed last Fri­day around 2 pm while on du­ty at the Besson Street Po­lice Sta­tion by of­fi­cers of the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau.

It is al­leged that Toolaram ac­cept­ed $3000,00 cash from a woman to se­cure bail for her hus­band who was charged for dri­ving un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol.

A par­ty of of­fi­cers led by Se­nior Supt To­taram Dookhie and in­clud­ing In­sp Hill, Cpl Lawrence Joe­field, Sgt Brit­tan Lawrence and Cpl Paul Mo­hammed con­duct­ed en­quiries af­ter the woman lodged a re­port.

On Fri­day, the woman point­ed out Toolaram. Fol­low­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions, Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions Roger Gas­pard SC gave in­struc­tions for the of­fi­cer to be charged.

Ag WP Cpl Na­tal­ie Car­ty laid the charge.

Toolaram ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Gomez yes­ter­day and was not called up­on to plead. Mag­is­trate Maris­sa Gomez grant­ed bail in the sum of $75,000. The mat­ter was ad­journed to Jan­u­ary 7.
