Five more people have died from COVID-19, taking the August death toll to 88.However, deaths accelerated in the last half of the month, as there were 62 deaths between August 17-31, compared to 24 from August 1-16.
Data from the Ministry of Health yesterday showed that the first 16 days averaged 1.5 deaths per day but there were 4.2 deaths daily in the second period. This is despite the fact that there was no significant difference in the number of daily reported cases among the total 7,636 reported for the month.
Based on the ministry’s COVID-19 dashboard for yesterday, 4,144 people have succumbed to COVID-19 and its related complications since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.
The ministry reported that on August 17, 3,390 of those were not fully vaccinated, 304 were fully vaccinated and 390 occurred before May 24, 2021.
The ministry also reported 182 new positive cases, taking the number of active cases to 5,694, 665 less than at the end of July.
Up to yesterday, 217 patients were in hospitals and step-down facilities.
Vaccinations continued at a slow pace, however, as there were 716,407 (51.2 per cent) fully vaccinated people and 683,593 people with either a single shot of a two-dose vaccine or none at all.
Health personnel also administered 168,246 vaccine boosters. Among those hospitalised throughout the pandemic, there were 4,062 fully vaccinated people and 16,129 not fully vaccinated.
